IBPS Clerk Exam Pattern and Syllabus
Phase I: Preliminary Examination (Objective Test)
The preliminary examination consists of three sections:
- English Language
- Numerical Ability
- Reasoning Ability
Each section carries specific weightage, and candidates must qualify in each section by securing the minimum cut-off marks set by IBPS.
Phase II: Main Examination (Objective Test)
The main examination is more comprehensive and includes four sections:
- General/Financial Awareness
- General English
- Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude
- Quantitative Aptitude
Candidates need to perform well in all sections to secure a place in the final merit list.
IBPS Clerk Eligibility Criteria
1. Nationality/Citizenship
A candidate must be either:
- A Citizen of India, or
- A subject of Nepal, or
- A subject of Bhutan, or
- A Tibetan refugee who migrated to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam) with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Candidates from the last four categories must have a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
2. Age Limit
The age criteria for IBPS Clerk recruitment are as follows:
- Minimum Age: 20 years
- Maximum Age: 28 years
However, age relaxation is provided for candidates belonging to certain categories:

3. Educational Qualification
To be eligible for the IBPS Clerk exam, a candidate must have:
- A Bachelorโs Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a university recognized by the Government of India.
- A valid mark sheet/degree certificate to confirm graduation status on the day of online registration.
- The ability to indicate the percentage of marks obtained in graduation while registering online.
4. Computer Literacy
Operating and working knowledge of computers is mandatory. Candidates must have:
- A Certificate/Diploma/Degree in Computer Operations or Language, OR
- Studied Computer/Information Technology as a subject in high school, college, or institute.
5. Proficiency in Official Language
Candidates should be proficient in the official language of the State/Union Territory they are applying for. This includes the ability to read, write, and speak the language fluently.
6. Special Relaxation for Ex-Servicemen
Ex-servicemen who do not meet the educational qualification criteria can still apply if they:
- Have passed matriculation (10th) and
- Obtained the Army Special Certificate of Education or an equivalent certificate in the Navy or Air Force after completing at least 15 years of service in the Armed Forces.
